Modes

  • Ranked 1v1: you against one opponent, each in your own copy of the same seed.
  • Ranked 2v2: two teams of two, each team sharing one world.
  • Co-op: two players share a world. Co-op is unrated: no Elo, rank or leaderboard.
  • 2× speed: the one game mode at launch. Game modes change how the game runs, not the goal of the run.

Before the start

Once a match is found it can't be cancelled or declined, so nobody can dodge. Two 10-second countdowns follow: one when the match is found and one on the loading screen. Nobody can see the seed until all 20 seconds have passed.

If your game crashes or fails to load before the start, you reconnect automatically and the match goes on.

During the run

  • Matches are played on Easy. If you die, you respawn and keep playing. Hardcore is never used in matches.
  • You can reset your world at any time, with no cooldown.
  • You see your opponent's advancements live, which also helps players spot cheating.
  • The seed stays secret: /seed is off, the seed is stored encrypted, and opening to LAN is blocked in 1v1. You can copy the seed once the match ends.

Votes and forfeits

An on-screen countdown shows when each of these unlocks, so you never have to guess.

OptionWhenHow it works
Seed-change voteUntil 3:00 in the top two ranks, until 4:30 belowBoth players have 30 seconds to agree. Each player can start at most 3 per match.
Draw voteFrom 4:30Both players have 30 seconds to agree.
ForfeitFrom 4:30, or 3:30 at the highest ranksEnds the match as a loss for you.

Which Splitstone ranks get the earlier forfeit is not decided yet, and the names of the votes may still change.

Leaving and disconnects

  • If you disconnect or crash mid-match, you reconnect automatically with your progress kept.
  • If you are away from the keyboard for 5 minutes, you forfeit automatically.
  • Leaving a match that then ends in a forfeit counts the same however it happened, because Splitstone can't tell a crash from a closed game. Penalties grow if it keeps happening.
  • Three forfeits in a row give a 3-minute queue ban, and the ban grows with each further forfeit in a row.

Winning and timing

The first player to enter the exit portal after the dragon dies wins. There is no time limit.

A 1v1 run records both real time and in-game time. Your result time is in-game time with any pause time added back, the way speedrun.com retimes random-seed runs, so pausing to plan doesn't help. 2v2 and co-op use real time.

If your opponent forfeits, you can keep playing; a small notice briefly offers to leave. A run you finish counts exactly as if they hadn't forfeited.

2v2 and co-op

  • A team wins as soon as its first player finishes.
  • A teammate who dies respawns, and one who disconnects rejoins, as in any shared Minecraft world.
  • If the host's game drops, the host has 3 minutes to reopen the world for their teammate. The clock keeps running.

After the match

  • The results screen offers a rematch, finding another match, or the main menu. A rematch is allowed once, both players must accept, and in ranked it counts for Elo.
  • You can like or dislike the seed. A seed both players dislike leaves the pool.
  • You can commend a teammate or opponent as a good teammate, a good sport or helpful.
  • The match stays in your public match history for good: result, times, opponents, seed and bastion type, Elo change, how it ended, deaths and resets, and the replay while it is kept (Replays).
